Tips on DIYing Your Grad Photos

Can I Take My Own Senior Pictures?

Let's talk senior pics, shall we? Sure, hiring a pro is always advised, but I get that sometimes it just isn’t in the budget.

So can you take your own senior pictures instead? Of course you can!

As your friendly neighborhood senior photography pro, I am going to share some tips on how to make the best out of it when dollars are short, but you still have memories to preserve.

(btw, I was in these shoes as a senior. I lived with my sister, and as much as I longed for the glamourous photo shoot on Galveston Beach, we got Picture People at the mall instead. And you know what? That was ok, too!)

But enough of that. Onward to these Senior Photo DIY tips!

1. Scout Your Backdrop:
I recommend natural light for DIYers, so a sunny cafe or coffee shop, the backyard, that rad graffiti wall down the street, or the local park are all good options.

2. Timing is Everything:
Golden hour is your best friend. That’s the last 30-40 mins before sunset. Grab that phone or camera when the sun decides to paint the sky, and voila – instant magic.

3. Pose Like Nobody's Watching:
Explore your signature pose. Whether it's the casual lean or the mysterious gaze into the distance, make it yours. No judgments; it's your show. Just be sure to practice it first so you feel comfortable and confident.
Pro tip: Find some great poses on Pinterest and recreate them!

4. Equipment Essentials:
Use what you've got. A smartphone with a decent camera can work wonders. Pro tip: Clean the lens – smudges are not invited to this photoshoot.

5. Light Play:
Natural light is your secret weapon. Position yourself so the light enhances your features. Windows are your friends; they're like Mother Nature's own spotlight.

If you’re outside, "open” shade is a good option…a shady spot with plenty of sunlight all around it. Be careful to avoid very sunny spots and staring into the sun. Squinty just isn’t the vibe we’re going for.

6. Edit Like a Boss:
Embrace the world of free editing apps. Tweak exposure and shadows, add a filter (just one, we're not trying to summon the '80s), and you'll probably get something that looks pretty decent! I use the “airbrush” app to help polish off my own selfies; it’s totally worth paying for the pro plan!

7. Props and Personal Touch:
Bring out the props – books, hats, instruments, whatever screams "you." This isn't just about a face; it's about telling your story.

8. Timer Magic:
Invest time in setting that timer. It's a workout, but the payoff is worth it.

Or better yet, grab a friend and make it an adventure! They can play with angles and tell you what looks good in real time.

9. Confidence is the Best Accessory:
Strut your stuff with confidence. Whether it's a goofy grin or a serious stare, confidence is the ultimate accessory.

10. Remember: DIYing is about You, Not Perfection
Your senior pics are a reflection of you, imperfections and all. So, embrace the chaos, laugh at the outtakes, and celebrate the fact that you just created something uniquely you.

If the DIY route doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, read below for why I recommend budgeting early for a pro shoot.

The Pro Perspective: Why Hire a Photographer

  1. They've already scouted the coolest locations. No guessing what will look good.

  2. Golden hour? They practically invented it. And they know what the light looks like at those cool locations they scouted.

  3. Pose Perfection. They've mastered the art of making you look like a model- without any of the awkward moments.

  4. Equipment Expertise: Ever looked at a pro camera and tried to figure it out? They’ve cracked the code, and that’s why the finished photos have that something a phone just can’t capture.

  5. Editing Elegance: No filters. Just a touch of magic to make you shine.

  6. Printing Knowledge: Professional portrait photographers have- or should have- an extensive knowledge of how to print your photos so they last way longer than your current smart phone ever will!
