Heading out for a beach photoshoot is all about capturing those perfect moments by the ocean, but let’s face it – dealing with unruly hair can be a total buzzkill and can completely make or break your final photos!
When it comes to keeping those front pieces of hair in check- and out of your face- during a windy photoshoot, there are plenty of stylish and practical ways to pin or pull back your hair. Here are my top six favorite ways to keep your hair from going crazy if the wind is stronger than we like it to be! Check out the pinterest links I’ve compiled below (just click on the photos!)
HAVE A LARGE FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT WITH SEVERAL GIRLS? PRO TIP: Mix and match these hairstyles for a fun, carefree look throughout your images!
1. A trusty braid.
Whether you go for a classic French braid or opt for trendy fishtails, braids are a surefire way to keep your hair looking neat and camera-ready. Plus, they look super effortless and beach vibe-y.
2. A simple twist
Twisting sections of hair and securing them back not only looks effortlessly chic but also helps tame any pesky flyaways, ensuring your photos turn out flawless.
3. A Knot
Whether you rock a sleek top knot or go for a tousled bun, knots are perfect for keeping your hair out of your face during windy photoshoots.
4. Bobby Pinned
When it comes to beach photoshoots, bobby pins are a secret weapon everyone should consider. These tiny, versatile tools are the unsung heroes of hairstyling, and here’s why they’re perfect for keeping those front strands out of your face. Use decorative ones to add interest to your ensemble!
5. Headbands
If you've spent time styling your hair for the photoshoot, the last thing you want is for it to get ruined by the wind. A headband helps to protect your hairstyle by keeping it neatly in place, ensuring that you look your best throughout the shoot.
6. The classic ponytail
Beach breezes can be unpredictable, but a ponytail offers a low-maintenance solution for keeping your hair under control. By securing your hair at the nape of your neck, you can minimize tangling and ensure it stays photo-ready, no matter how gusty it gets.
There you have it! My absolute favorite hairstyles for beach photoshoots.
Next time you’re gearing up for one, give one of these styles a try – your hair (and your photographer!) will thank you, and your photos will be picture-perfect!
Don’t love any of these? Consider a hat! But be sure it fits well- you don’t want to lose it in the water!

Are Senior Pics Required?
Senior portraits – are they really necessary?
Let's dive in and see why they're not a requirement, but why it’s a good idea to budget for some, anyway!
What is Senior Photography?
Senior portraits are more than just pictures; they’re a visual time capsule of your senior year. It's freezing that time between childhood and adulthood, where you’re on the edge of new beginnings. The goal is to capture the excitement of the future and bittersweet moments of closing a major chapter of your life.

Veni, Vidi, Venci: I came, I saw, I conquered. That’s school in a nutshell, right? Show up, learn stuff, graduate, and begin the next adventure. In this senior session with David, we were able to capture a lot of moods and styles, from bopping around the artfully-gritty parts of Galveston to a brief fine art session in my Santa Fe studio.
While the train yard and downtown gave us some rich, saturated red, orange, and rust, we kept the fine art session super-neutral. Emphasizing black-on-black layered dress clothes, using the black and silver weights, and converting some of our outdoor shots to black-and-white created a cohesive gallery.
5 Ways to Style Your Senior Photo Session
The 5 tips below are a good starting point for anyone looking to put together their senior portrait wardrobe!

“Every good and perfect gift is from above.” (James 1:17)
In August we welcomed this wonderful little family into the studio to celebrate their latest good and perfect gift: baby Bailey!
In the pre-session consultation, mama Shelby gave us some inspiring input about Bailey’s nursery — aka “the babe cave.” We used the same boho-chic floral to style the session props. The dusty pink and neutral cream hues of the session are classics that Bailey won’t outgrow. Also, our generous session length allowed for many wardrobe changes — I mean, did you see ALL the adorable headbands?! Those images were varied enough to fill a whole gallery, but fortunately Joshua and 4-year-old Bentley were also able to join in for some precious family poses.

Do they dream in color? Probably… in fact, most claims of dreaming in monochromatic black and white are from people who grew up watching black and white television! Nevertheless, we scooted way up close and got some gorgeous greyscale artsy shots of this cutie’s features from head to toes.
Whatever a newborn dreams of, what a blessing it is to be able to wake up 100% loved!

Since I’ve been this family’s go-to photographer for two older siblings’ senior portraits, I was excited to “collect them all” and enjoy a unique Galveston session with Devin!
From gritty graffiti to understated downtown black-and-white, we got an incredible range. Devin’s yellow tee with a bright red Razorback-on-a-chain played great with the bright colors at the train yard, but a long-sleeved plaid layer quickly muted the look to add further variety to the shoot.
So, how do you keep a sentimental mom from crying when you reach a major milestone like high school graduation? Well, you can’t (lol), but you can make her laugh. What better way to say, “I’ll always be your baby?” than to re-create some pictures from yesteryear? This is why it’s nice to have actual prints, too: posing with the old framed portraits presents K-12 all in one fun and memorable shot!
Mortarboard and Boardwalk
What was your first after-school job? Did you like it? For recent high school graduate Jalynne, the Kemah Boardwalk continues to be a happy entry into responsible young-adulthood. In fact, she's been promoted as a lead and plans to stay in these familiar (and very fun) stomping grounds, at least through earning an associate's degree in community college. Jalynne qualified for accelerated graduation on May 22nd, so her post-secondary life and senior portraits happened a whole year sooner than originally expected!
The day of the session was a little windier and more overcast than we’d hoped, but schedule-wise, we had to make it work, come what may. Fortunately, the dim sky and a little editing made the carnival lights pop!
Despite the concerns about the weather, as well as some worries over parking and crowds, it turns out that Kemah’s expansive entertainment zone also yields plenty of secluded areas to give a quiet, focused, and inviting feeling to Jalynne’s portraits. We’ll keep an eye out for her next time we take the kids on “vacation” to the Kemah Boardwalk!
